Our Sustainability Program focuses on integrating blue and green economy practices across coastal and inland communities, corporate operations, and educational institutions. We aim to accelerate Africa’s transition toward sustainable blue livelihoods by promoting clean energy solutions, reducing ocean-bound emissions, advancing circular economy models, and expanding green-blue investment opportunities within coastal and marine ecosystems.
Sustainability is a core pillar of SBI’s mission — to build climate-resilient coastal economies that balance environmental stewardship with social and economic well-being. Through strategic partnerships, we embed sustainability into both community enterprises and organizational operations, helping our partners achieve ESG and CSR goals that align with ocean health and climate resilience.

Sustainability lies at the heart of SBI’s mission. We are committed to fostering long-term ocean, community, and economic resilience through innovative, scalable blue solutions. By promoting partnerships that integrate sustainability across sectors — from coastal management to marine enterprise — we drive impact that benefits both people and planet.
Through strategic collaborations, we help organizations and communities embed sustainability and blue economy principles into their operations, ensuring their efforts contribute to a climate-resilient, ocean-conscious, and inclusive future.
Key Focus Areas
Blue Livelihood Development
We support the creation of sustainable, ocean-based livelihoods such as seaweed and azolla farming, eco-tourism, aquaculture, and coastal restoration enterprises that generate income while preserving marine ecosystems.
Clean Energy Transition
We collaborate with coastal and island communities to implement renewable energy technologies such as solar drying for seaweed, clean cooking solutions for fisher households, and low-carbon cold storage facilities for fish value chains. These solutions enhance productivity, reduce emissions, and promote energy access.
Circular Blue Economy
SBI promotes waste-to-value initiatives, marine plastic recovery programs, and sustainable production systems that minimize waste and regenerate natural capital. Our focus is on linking environmental protection with local economic empowerment.
Corporate ESG & Blue Investment
We help companies, institutions, and investors integrate blue sustainability into their ESG frameworks — from conducting environmental social impact assessment and audit, designing blue carbon offset projects to facilitating partnerships that drive investment in ocean-based solutions and coastal resilience.
Our Impact
Through our collaborative blue sustainability efforts, we have:
Supported the establishment of community-led blue enterprises focused on aquaculture, seaweed and azolla farming, and coastal restoration.
Advanced clean energy adoption in coastal production systems, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and supporting a just energy transition.
Facilitated green-blue financing opportunities, linking investors with climate-smart enterprises that create jobs while regenerating ecosystems.
Promoted marine conservation and decarbonization, aligning community development with global ocean-climate goals.
