Our blue restoration initiatives focus on protecting and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems — from mangrove forests and coral reefs to seagrass meadows — to preserve biodiversity and sustain livelihoods. We promote nature-based, community-led solutions that balance ecological health with human prosperity, creating resilient coastlines and thriving ocean life.

Our conservation and restoration initiatives focus on protecting marine and coastal ecosystems while restoring degraded habitats to sustain biodiversity and ecological balance. SBI champions ocean-based and community-led solutions that integrate sustainability into daily life, empowering coastal populations to become stewards of their blue natural capital.
Core Conservation Projects:
Coastal Habitat Restoration:
We work with local communities to restore mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass meadows — ecosystems vital for carbon sequestration, fisheries, and shoreline protection.
Marine Education & Awareness:
Through school programs, eco-clubs, and coastal campaigns, we raise awareness about ocean conservation, marine pollution, and sustainable coastal living, nurturing a generation of ocean-conscious citizens.
Blue Carbon & Biodiversity Mapping:
By leveraging digital tools and marine GIS, we map blue carbon ecosystems, track restoration progress, and guide data-driven conservation strategies.
Community Co-Management:
We collaborate with Beach Management Units (BMUs), Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs), women’s groups, and local fishers to design and manage sustainable marine-use models. These community-led conservation zones protect critical habitats while supporting small-scale fisheries and local economies.
Plastic-Free Coastlines:
SBI leads shoreline clean-ups and circular economy campaigns to reduce ocean plastic pollution while creating green and blue jobs for coastal youth.
By linking conservation with livelihoods, SBI ensures that coastal communities become custodians of their own marine resources, blending traditional knowledge with science to achieve long-term ocean health and social well-being.
Through collaboration with our partners and coastal communities, we have:
25,000 mangroves restored along Kenya’s coast
5,000 corals planted in degraded reef areas
12 coastal restoration sites established
4,200 community members engaged and trained in blue conservation
3 ocean literacy programs launched for schools and youth groups
